Attention teachers: we bring the show to you!
Brooklyn College Presents'
completes a successful first season
Brooklyn College Presents launched its inaugural SchoolTime-To-Go (STTG) program at Cultural Arts Academy, a charter school with a focus on arts education located in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Students in grades K-6 gathered with their teachers for three performances by the Redhawk Native American Dancers, who presented songs, stories, dances, and traditions of several Native American nations. The 50-minute long performance engaged the students in participatory dances, educated them about where they can find Native American culture references in their own communities, and debunked stereotypes about Native Americans.
The students and teachers were thrilled to have had this experience without having to leave their school. One teacher remarked, “it was an excellent performance...The scholars really wanted to get involved and continued to talk about it.”
The students also commented, “I loved that [the Redhawk dancers] are so proud of their culture” and “I was inspired to be proud of my heritage.”
Through this new initiative, Brooklyn College Presents is excited to deepen relationships with local schools and artists through residency programs and make STTG a permanent part of its arts education program, which has been serving students across the borough for over four decades.
In order to provide this unique opportunity to schools who may not be able to travel to our performances, we are actively seeking support from our fellow community members who want to help us make this possible.
