It is an odd human instinct to believe that if we don’t give voice to what ails us, it will simply disappear. In A Map of Virtue, the play considers where "it" all goes. Split into seven parts: Curiosity, Loyalty, Empathy, Honesty, Integrity, Love and Intuition, the story unfolds from the perspective of a bird statue with ominous beginnings and by the protagonists in an interview-like style. With the use of song and deeply poetic language, the playwright takes us into the lives of Mark and Sarah, who are marked by an inability to give voice to their own pain and linked by a kind of chilling inner darkness, a chance encounter, and a bird.

Erin Courtney is a Guggenheim Fellow, Obie Award-winning playwright and Assistant Professor in the MFA Playwriting program at Brooklyn College.
